Movie Review: Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist

Norah: There's this part of Judaism that I like. Tikun Olam. It said that the world is broken into pieces and everyone has to find them and put them back together. Nick: Maybe we don't have to find it. Maybe we are the pieces.

I always thought that my dream guy would be someone who shares the exact interest as mine. I’ll go and visit his house and I’ll find him in his room, figuring out how some certain gadget works or he’ll ask me to take a look at his latest Photoshop trick. Or maybe our dates will consist of laying lazily in the couch or bed and watching Johnny Depp or Tim Burton flicks. Or I guess quality time for us is sitting near the window with our coffees and exchanging dark thoughts about how we think the life of those people outside is so miserable and mundane while Weezer’s The World Has Turned And Left Me Here is playing on the background.

Unfortunately, life couldn’t be perfect to ever make that happen. Luckily, we have Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist to turn to when our world seems to be impossible.

Norah (Kat Dennings) found her musical soulmate in the form of Nick (Michael Cera) in the film “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (Director: Peter Sollett) Nick’s heart was caught in the ground shattered by his ex-girlfriend Tris (Alexis Dziena). Then comes Norah but the fantasy “love at first sight” was found absurd until both realizes that they have nothing in common but love for music. Because of this, they become aware that nothing is better than sharing our passion to others who has the same as ours and both fall in a mutual agreement we call love.

One of the best traits of this film are the dialogues. One great wonder from the writer. This movie doesn’t care if you think their sarcasm is not funny. All they want is to deliver a very smart dialogue for their viewers. I believe this, above all other elements, made the movie superior against other romantic-comedy films. Sometimes I think that the witty exchange of words of the characters pump up my evil assessment with people who dares to be in a conversation with me. It has a kind and unselfish disposition, extremely funny, effective cast and excellent soundtrack.

My personal favorite part of the film is when Nick and Norah finally did it and the focus of the camera was on some meter. The meter actually symbolizes that Norah has reached her climax. Please don’t call me a pervert because that shot was an excellent and original (I believe) portrayal of a climax. It defies the conventional sex scenes from other movies.

Young adults are most likely to relate in this film. The characters’ energy and interaction between each other is highly recognizable, giving us the impression that this is our life. And though we’re drunk most of the time and can’t find the reason why shallowness is rampant in spite of the numerous campaigns about one’s individuality, something as romantic as this could happen to us, too.

Norah got her night filled with band-crazed people, almost unending search for a drunk friend, running, road tripping, alcohol, looking at each others’ eyes until she finds the hands where hers fit perfectly. I don’t know when my night will come but I’m certain that it’s going to be as memorable as this.

It’s February! You don’t need to catch the latest film in the cinema. Offer her a visit at your house. Order some pizzas and get some sodas in the frige. Position the couch to the most comfortable place in front of the telly and play this film in your player. If she’s worth it, she’s going to love this.

P.S.
I love you, Michael Cera! With all of my heart. Plus some cherries on top.

Porn stars for a night

Tell me who your girls are!

Last Sunday, my friends and I threw a surprised bridal shower for a college friend. She was the first one who will ever get marry on our circle of friends, thus we concluded that she deserved this treat. Plus, we all ditched her on the night that was supposed to be her bridal shower.

I had a very hectic schedule that day. I have a wedding to attend at 4 o’clock and this bridal shower at 7 in the evening. My office mate’s wedding started a little bit late that’s why my time screwed up slightly. I didn’t had the chance to eat anymore at the reception because I was the one who was assigned to fetch the bride-to-be.

We checked in a room at Citadel Inn at Makati. I told the bride-to-be that I was just getting something from a cousin of mine. I was with Ara, too at that time. So when we opened the room, all lights were turned off but we saw another friend under the table and that is the time that they had to jumped off from wherever they are and tell the bride-to-be what we’re up to.

We didn’t hire any dancers, mind you. I think they’re expensive plus the fact that those aren’t really our thing. We came up with the porn stars theme, though. We dressed like one except that I never thought they’d really heed that so I just brought a shirt and a shorts. Haha! I think I got them there! We had naughty games, made possible by Sabrina. Food and beers, gift giving and of course pictorials will never be forgotten once you are with these people. There were like, four cameras, I guess? Once you pose, flash lights flicker everywhere you look. We actually have a program planned but once we closed the door of our hotel room, everything around us stopped and it’s like we’re alone in the world that we are free to dance, sing, jump and do crazy stuff. I did see that coming, though!

I left our room at ten in the morning the following day with one of our friend. I have to go to work at two in the afternoon. On my way, I thought about the inevitable fact that we’re not getting any younger. We have passed the day where everyone is throwing a debut and the time when we’re all anxious about the coming graduation. This year, one friend is getting marry. In a few years, another one will tie the knot too and there will be more bridal showers to attend to. I believe I can see baby shower and baptism also in the future.

Our generation is taking over. There are no more rooms for jeans, shirts and sneakers anymore. Sometimes, I feel that I have no choice but to grow up now. Just now, I realized I must act responsibly, face the world with maturity and keep learning in the process. I can’t believe I’m saying this now but we’re all grown ups. Yes, we are.

I try to keep in mind every advice that comes from someone who’s older than me. Someone once told me not to rush things and enjoy life slowly. Another one told me to keep saving for the future. What I have now is not going to be here forever. But I think the best one that I got came from a professor in college. It’s about love. She said that to wait patiently has a satisfying result in the end. It’s not true that good partners are under extinction. If we wait, we’re going to have the best. I guess, I can do that. With flying colors.

Claude also has a blog entry about this event. Go check her out! Also, I created a short video for the bride-to-be. And since our planned program was not followed, I only had the chance to show it to her when we’re about to sleep. I used Butterfly of Crazy Town in this video so anytime soon the audio will be removed by YouTube. For the mean time, please enjoy!

One of the E-Series Beauty

For months, I’ve been asking people (both in real life and virtual life) to suggest a good and cheap phone. I don’t need high-end ones. Just something that can call, SMS capable, internet ready and probably something chic in style. My browser is full of bookmarked web pages of phone reviews. I have a list of phones that met my standards and all I need is a long and deep meditation to decide which one to buy.
First, let me clear that this is not just for luxury. My Nokia 3110c is getting old and is having a very hard time to breathe. Whenever I’m composing a message or having a call and a new message comes in, it just automatically restarts itself as if saying to me that he’s weak and could only do things one at a time. Since it’s Christmas season and I believe I deserve a gift, I concluded that I should get a new phone.
So last Wednesday, I went to visit the Chronicle Office (college org) and see for the first time their new office. I also wanted to see Josh because I wanted to see his new phone as what I’ve read on his tweet last week. So after the catching up and exploring his new phone, Josh, I, and the rest of the gang found ourselves at the Cyber Zone of SM manila purchasing my new Nokia e63.
To finally point out the essence of this entry, I got myself a Nokia e63. It’s so awesome I forgot the meaning of regret. It’s like a mobile computer. It can do the things that I do with my laptop. With wi-fi, it’s just so powerful. I’ve already downloaded applications that are useful to me and it just made my mobile experience easier and more fun. This phone ranges from 10, 500 Php to 12, 000 Php. For full specification of this unit, see this.

We do not need a new year to get going

Do you remember watching pyrotechnics in amusement like it’s your first time and eating so much until your stomach can’t take it anymore? That was just yesterday. Today is January 2, 2010. The second day of the first week of the tenth year of the 21st century.

Happy New Year from the employees on duty!

How time flies so fast.

I didn’t welcome dear 2010 at home as most of you guys did. While everyone on the face of the planet was preparing to embrace the new year with abundant dining table and colorful fireworks, I was on duty and working my ass off as a corporate slave. I guess, what made it seems not so bad after all was that I was with people who always make sure that every freaking day of every freaking second must rock. Thank you for my lovable as a bunny and cool as a rock star shift mates.

Do I need to review the meaning of beautiful then?

I don’t like fireworks. Or fire crackers. Or anything colorful that is explosive. I sure do go like “Wow, ang gandaaa!” (Wow, it’s so beautiful!) whenever I witness one. But I say this because I don’t know how to react when I’m with people who stares at fireworks like it’s a miracle or something. Moments like this is not actually the best time to ruin the happy and cute thoughts of people. But tell me what is beautiful with noise, smoke and floating materials up in the sky? By this time, our ozone layer is 300 times thinner than December 31. Why do we do this?

Okay. That photo sucks but that’s just how I view fireworks. Sun set is beautiful. Fireworks are pollutants.

Actually, new year is just another day. If you look at it closely, there’s nothing special about it. We do this every other 365 days. New hope can not be found in a new year. You don’t need twelve months to recognize your mistakes and decide to change for the better. You don’t need a year to realize that you want to have a good life. A span of time is not essential to glamour yourself up against this mad world. There’s no better time than the present.

Time flies so fast. Everyday we start anew. Death is the only ending. I don’t want to realize in the end that I have forgotten to live. Let’s do the jiggle NOW!

Okay, that’s me speaking there. I said this is the best best season to become a better you on my previous entry and that’s just shit. You see, if you hear me saying cliche stuff, that’s just not the real me. It’s my way of telling everyone that I’m too tired to argue so just let it be whatever you wanted it to be.

Hello, world!

Descending Mt. Maculot (March 2010)

Hi there! This is my new personal blog. I’ve been blogging since the fourth year of the 21st century but I wasn’t really serious and I just babble a lot of non sense stuff. I’m trying to change that now. Sorry if sometimes I can’t help it. Before, I used to blog here.

I like to change blog URL and username a lot but that’s because I’m inconsistent in everything I do. I like that wordpress doesn’t offer you that feature but it lets you export your blog and import it to your new blog which I think is very tedious but I’ve done that already. Twice. Haha! I’ll probably get a domain soon, that way I can stick with my URL. I’ll probably get something boring like blogofgervic.com or something to that effect.

Forgive me for all the typographical and grammatical errors that I have and may cause. I don’t usually proof read and by the time I realized that I did posted something shameful, it’s often too late to change it because people could have read it already.

So, I am Gervic, twenty one years of age. I turn a year older every 25th of May. I’m from Manila, Philippines. A Mass Communication graduate from Adamson University, currently working as a video editor in a popular TV network here in our country. I like hiking, nature, falls and I don’t know how drive a bike. I didn’t bother to learn because I like walking… in my bare feet. I don’t watch local TV a lot but it’s basically part of my job so I don’t have any choice. I do like watching TV series and cartoons like Skins, The Big Bang Theory, That 70s Show, Southpark, Simpsons, The Family Guy, Gossip Girl and Entourage to name a few. I’m also into films but I rarely watch in cinemas because it has become expensive  for me ever since I learned about Torrent. I listen to a lot of music artists whose genre range from pop rock to ballad to RnB, it all depends on my mood. I wish I could read books just like I did when I was still going to school because I don’t do much of that nowadays because of too much distractions.

Real world routine includes working, staring blankly at the ceiling and making my sister’s life miserable.

I like receiving letters so give me some at gervic.estella at gmail dot com.

Oh yes, happy new year!!!
